{"id":782,"date":"2024-07-23T11:55:22","date_gmt":"2024-07-23T15:55:22","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/miwf.org\/?post_type=mwhof&#038;p=782"},"modified":"2024-07-23T11:55:22","modified_gmt":"2024-07-23T15:55:22","slug":"clara-stanton-jones","status":"publish","type":"mwhof","link":"https:\/\/miwf.org\/celebrating-women\/michigan-womens-hall-of-fame\/clara-stanton-jones\/","title":{"rendered":"Clara Stanton Jones"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>(1913-2012)<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>First woman and first African American to serve as director of a major public library system in the United States.\u00a0In 1944, Clara accepted a position at the Detroit Public Library, and by her retirement, she had transformed libraries everywhere. With a focus on community, Clara worked to desegregate libraries, library services, and overall library culture by encouraging the American Library Association to pass the \u201cResolution on Racism and Sexism Awareness.\u201d Clara was active in multiple organizations throughout her lifetime, including the American Library Association where she was the first African American President. In 1978, she was appointed by President Jimmy Carter to the National Commission on Libraries and Information Science. She was a member of the Public Library Association, American Civil Liberties Union, National Council of Negro Women, and more.
