Williams was born on Mackinac Island in 1844. Her first husband Clement Van Riper, whom she married in 1860, was appointed keeper of the Beaver Island Harbor Light in St. James. She assisted her husband in his duties winding the heavy clockwork mechanism and cleaning and polishing the lighthouse\u2019s Fresnel lens. When her husband was lost at sea, she was given his position. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Later, when she remarried, she transferred to keep Little Traverse Light near Harbor Springs. Over the years, Williams earned widespread acclaim and attention for her work as a keeper. By 1897, she was one of only four female keepers stationed at lighthouses in the Great Lakes region. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In 1904, the\u00a0<em>Detroit Free Press<\/em>\u00a0captured the challenges and significance of Williams\u2019 lifesaving role on behalf of maritime transportation. \u201cFor more than three decades she has been in charge of one of Uncle Sam\u2019s lighthouses on the Great Lakes, doing daily and nightly work which only the hardiest of men have been accustomed to do.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n","protected":false},"featured_media":4194,"parent":0,"template":"","meta":{"_acf_changed":false,"inline_featured_image":false,"ghostkit_customizer_options":"","ghostkit_custom_css":"","ghostkit_custom_js_head":"","ghostkit_custom_js_foot":"","ghostkit_typography":"","footnotes":""},"class_list":["post-4448","mwhof","type-mwhof","status-publish","has-post-thumbnail","hentry"],"acf":[],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO Premium plugin v26.2 (Yoast SEO v26.2) -
