{"id":3167,"date":"2024-09-12T11:41:45","date_gmt":"2024-09-12T15:41:45","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/miwf.org\/?post_type=mwhof&#038;p=3167"},"modified":"2024-09-12T11:41:46","modified_gmt":"2024-09-12T15:41:46","slug":"harriette-simpson-arnow","status":"publish","type":"mwhof","link":"https:\/\/miwf.org\/celebrating-women\/michigan-womens-hall-of-fame\/harriette-simpson-arnow\/","title":{"rendered":"Harriette Simpson Arnow"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>(1908 \u2013 1986)<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A Kentuckian of Daughters of the American Revolution lineage, Harriette Arnow began to write when she was very young, and continued to write while earning a degree at the University of Louisville and working as a rural and city school teacher. She married and her family moved to Detroit in the early 1950s. Of her five novels, two are set in Michigan. <em>Hunter\u2019s Horn<\/em> won the National Book award in 1949, and the classic <em>The Dollmaker<\/em>, a best seller, was made into a television motion picture, produced by and starring Jane Fonda. <em>The Dollmaker<\/em> describes the lives of poor hill people enticed by industry to northern cities during World War II. Joyce Carol Oates called it \u201cour most unpretentious masterpiece.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Arnow\u2019s work also includes social histories, such as <em>Seedtime of the Cumberland<\/em>, 1960; <em>Flowering of the Cumberland<\/em>, 1963; and <em>Old Burnside<\/em>, 1977. All have received wide applause from critics and academics alike.
