{"id":2748,"date":"2024-09-10T16:50:54","date_gmt":"2024-09-10T20:50:54","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/miwf.org\/?post_type=mwhof&#038;p=2748"},"modified":"2024-09-10T16:50:55","modified_gmt":"2024-09-10T20:50:55","slug":"connie-binsfeld","status":"publish","type":"mwhof","link":"https:\/\/miwf.org\/celebrating-women\/michigan-womens-hall-of-fame\/connie-binsfeld\/","title":{"rendered":"Connie Binsfeld"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>(1924 \u2013 2014)<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When Connie Binsfeld was first elected Michigan\u2019s lieutenant governor, she earned a special place in state history. She became the first woman to hold a position of leadership in both the executive and legislative branches of state government. As an advocate on behalf of children, family life, and women, Binsfeld authored domestic violence legislation, which is considered among the strongest in the nation. As chair of the 1994 Michigan International Year of the Family celebration, she helped form the Chance at Childhood Foundation. The Foundation seeks to identify and replicate proven, effective intervention and treatment programs aimed at child abuse, neglect, and exploitation. Additionally, she chaired the 1991 Commission on Adoption and the 1996 Binsfeld Children\u2019s Commission. Under her leadership, many of the Commissions\u2019 recommendations were enacted into law to improve the lives of children.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Environmental issues affecting family life also benefited from Binsfeld\u2019s involvement. She authored the Sand Dunes Protection Act and introduced the 1983 Quality of Life Bonding Bill which improved environmental cleanup and the state park system. At the national level, she served as President Ronald Reagan\u2019s appointee to the North Country Scenic Trail Council and President George H. W. Bush\u2019s appointee to the National Park System Advisory Board. She spent 10 years on the Great Lakes Commission working to preserve Michigan\u2019s most precious natural resource, the Great Lakes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Not all of Binsfeld\u2019s contributions were in the realm of government. A lifetime Girl Scout, Binsfeld was a camp counselor, den mother, and a scout troop leader. She worked with underprivileged children as a camp counselor for St. Vincent de Paul, volunteered with pediatric patients at Royal Oak\u2019s Beaumont Hospital, and helped found Caring Arms, a statewide network between existing programs and services for children and their families.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>All of Connie Binsfeld\u2019s life was devoted to children and families, particularly children in need. Her belief in the importance of Michigan\u2019s future generations was clear when she said, \u201cChildren are our joy, our hope, our promise, our assurance of a better tomorrow.
