{"id":2730,"date":"2024-09-10T16:39:26","date_gmt":"2024-09-10T20:39:26","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/miwf.org\/?post_type=mwhof&#038;p=2730"},"modified":"2024-09-10T16:39:26","modified_gmt":"2024-09-10T20:39:26","slug":"martha-jean-steinberg","status":"publish","type":"mwhof","link":"https:\/\/miwf.org\/celebrating-women\/michigan-womens-hall-of-fame\/martha-jean-steinberg\/","title":{"rendered":"Martha Jean Steinberg"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>(1929 \u2013 2000)<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Martha Jean \u201cThe Queen\u201d Steinberg, a black radio pioneer and scholar, helped set the guidelines and standards for black radio in America. \u201cThe Queen\u201d started her radio career in 1954 at WDIA, Memphis, Tennessee.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In 1963, radio station WCHB in Inkster, Michigan invited her to the Detroit area where she became an instant success. In 1982, \u201cThe Queen\u201d went to WQBH radio as vice president and general manager. Fourteen years later, \u201cThe Queen\u201d purchased WQBH (Queen\u2019s Broadcasting Corporation) and became president and general manager.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe Queen\u201d contributed to much of the scholarship and development of black radio. She was one of four black radio pioneers at the New York City Museum of Television and Radio\u2019s first-ever seminar on \u201cBlack Radio, Yesterday and Today.\u201d She was featured in the Radio America series \u201cPassing It On: Voices from Black America\u2019s Past,\u201d broadcast in 1995. She narrated the documentary on Barry Gordy and the early years of the Motown Sound, entitled \u201cThe Music &amp; The Story,\u201d for The Henry Ford.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe Queen\u201d was inducted into the prestigious State of Michigan Black Women\u2019s Hall of Fame at the Detroit Historical Museum and she was featured in Radio Smithsonian\u2019s \u201cBlack Radio: Telling it Like it Was.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe Queen\u201d received a number of awards for her outstanding achievements. The School of Social Work, Alumni Association, Wayne State University presented her with the U.S. Citizen of the Year award for her extraordinary contributions to the community. She also received the Michiganian of the Year award, an award recommended by Detroit newspaper readers and news staffs in recognition of contributions to the community and to the betterment of life in Michigan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Martha Jean Steinberg was the single mother of three daughters, all of whom graduated from college and into successful careers. She was also a minister and founder of the nondenominational Order of the Fisherman Ministry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Martha Jean \u201cThe Queen\u201d Steinberg was a radio legend, an outstanding human being, an inspiration and a powerful voice for peace, progress, prosperity and goodwill toward all.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"featured_media":2731,"parent":0,"template":"","meta":{"_acf_changed":false,"inline_featured_image":false,"ghostkit_customizer_options":"","ghostkit_custom_css":"","ghostkit_custom_js_head":"","ghostkit_custom_js_foot":"","ghostkit_typography":"","footnotes":""},"class_list":["post-2730","mwhof","type-mwhof","status-publish","has-post-thumbnail","hentry"],"acf":[],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO Premium plugin v26.2 (Yoast SEO v26.2) -
