{"id":1414,"date":"2024-08-05T10:00:17","date_gmt":"2024-08-05T14:00:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/miwf.org\/?post_type=mwhof&#038;p=1414"},"modified":"2024-08-05T10:00:18","modified_gmt":"2024-08-05T14:00:18","slug":"carol-atkins","status":"publish","type":"mwhof","link":"https:\/\/miwf.org\/celebrating-women\/michigan-womens-hall-of-fame\/carol-atkins\/","title":{"rendered":"Carol Atkins"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>(1923 \u2013 2013)<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Carol Atkins was raised by parents who told her she could be anything she wanted to be. But, at college, she encountered resistance to her plans for a non-traditional career. That was when her passion for women\u2019s rights was born. In the early 1970s, she joined other activists from the National Organization for Women in demonstrating at the boys-only Little League World Series. By taking a stand, these women were instrumental in enabling girls to participate in the world\u2019s largest organized youth sports program.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A long-time journalist with the <em>Manistee News Advocate<\/em>, she also exercised her writing skills as an author. Her first book, \u2018Putting It Together,\u2019 explored the theories and goals of feminism and was selected to be part of the Michigan Women\u2019s Commission archives. Turning toward the stage, she drafted \u2018In Their Own Words: 19th-Century Suffragists Tell It Like It Was.\u2019 In this one-act play, Susan B. Anthony, Elizabeth Cady Stanton, and other leaders in the fight for women\u2019s suffrage describe this unique social movement which accomplished its goals without resorting to violence. Atkins used this play to educate women, girls, and others about the work these individuals put into making the world a better place for all women.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A second play, \u2018Our Foremothers, Our Friends,\u2019 a conversation between modern and early feminists, saw its debut in 2006 to rave reviews at Manistee\u2019s Celebrating Women Festival.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"featured_media":1415,"parent":0,"template":"","meta":{"_acf_changed":false,"inline_featured_image":false,"ghostkit_customizer_options":"","ghostkit_custom_css":"","ghostkit_custom_js_head":"","ghostkit_custom_js_foot":"","ghostkit_typography":"","footnotes":""},"class_list":["post-1414","mwhof","type-mwhof","status-publish","has-post-thumbnail","hentry"],"acf":[],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO Premium plugin v26.2 (Yoast SEO v26.2) -
