Marlo Thomas was an award-winning actress, author, and activist whose body of work continues to have an impact on American entertainment and culture. She was honored with four Emmy Awards, the Peabody, a Golden Globe, and a Grammy, and was inducted into the Broadcasting Hall of Fame.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Thomas burst onto the scene in 1966 in television\u2019s \u201cThat Girl,\u201d which broke new ground for independent women everywhere, and which she also conceived and produced. Her pioneering spirit continued with her creation of \u201cFree to Be\u2026You and Me,\u201d a project that became a platinum album, best-selling book, Emmy Award-winning television special, and a stage show. She was also a constant presence on television (with continuing roles on \u201cUgly Betty\u201d and \u201cFriends\u201d) and on and off Broadway.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Thomas was the creator of five books, \u201cFree to Be, You and Me,\u201d \u201cFree to Be, a Family,\u201d \u201cThe Right Words at the Right Time\u201d (volumes 1 and 2), and \u201cThanks and Giving: All Year Long.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
She was honored for her activism with the Helen Caldicott Award for Nuclear Disarmament, the ACLU\u2019s Thomas Paine Award, the American Women in Radio and Television Satellite Award, and the William Kunstler Racial Justice Award.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Marlo Thomas served as the national outreach director for St. Jude Children\u2019s Research Hospital which was founded by her father, Danny Thomas.
